Treasure Beach within stone’s throw of $2 million

A Girls Bestfriend moved Treasure Beach a step closer to the $2 million mark in 2019 progeny earnings with a strong come-from-behind performance yesterday that lit up the tote board at Tampa Bay Downs.

The 4-year-old gelding owned and bred by Endsley Oaks Farm had only two horses beaten early in the one-mile race, but Leslie Mawing was able to maneuver him up to sixth on the backstretch. A wide move on the turn quickly reeled in the top five and A Girls Bestfriend was in cruise control down the stretch, defeating the 8/5 favorite by 1 1/4 lengths. He paid a whopping $94.40, became his sire’s 49th winner this year and the $8,150 check raised Treasure Beach’s earnings to $1,968,198.
